Google GDrive is not a rumor

Posted by Harsha

According to these notes from Google’s Analyst Day Power Point presentation, GDrive is definitely on the horizon. This new service will let you store just about any file and access them from anywhere. Like other Google services (Video, Maps, etc.), GDrive will most likely have a basic (free) membership along with a variety of upgrade (paid) options.

"With infinite storage, we can house all user files, including: emails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc). We already have efforts in this direction in terms of GDrive, GDS, Lighthouse, but all of them face bandwidth and storage constraints today." — excerpt from Analyst Day presentation notes.

Google switching to AMD Processors

Posted by Harsha

intel
Google Inc. is switching its servers to run on AMD Inc. chips instead of those made by Intel Corp., according to a Morgan Stanley report.

Google, which has more than 200,000 servers, has started to buy AMD Opteron processors with almost all new purchases.

As AMD processors are cheaper than Intel's recently it has been winning over many corporate customers.

The switch may also come as a blow to Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini, who sits on Google's board. Advanced Micro, the No. 2 maker of computer processors behind Intel, last quarter took more than 20% of the market for the first time in more than four years.

Microsoft New Search Engine

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft will introduce a search engine better than Google in six months in the United States and Britain followed by Europe according to Neil Holloway, Microsoft president for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Microsoft will also integrate the new "better" search engine into Windows Messenger and Hotmail but not in Windows Vista.

Microsoft's goal is not just its initial offering but would go beyond finding URLs and instead focus in on the specific information sought by Internet users.

For example, he said, potential home-buyers might find a group of houses in the price range and with the precise amenities they are seeking.

Or a surfer might find a restaurant with the kind of menu a diner wants in a particular geographic area.

Monster Pod

Posted by Harsha

Here is a interesting way to take your photos in different angles, this tripod can stick any surface that you can think of.

This new invention is a sort of anti-tripod called the MonsterPod. The $30 MonsterPod has no telescoping legs, clamps, or straps. Instead, it sticks to surfaces via a “viscoelastic morphing polymer”—if that means as little to you as it does to me, imagine a giant wad of extra-sticky Silly Putty.

MonsterPod sticks to almost anything that has a hard surface; in addition to the golf club, I watched it stick to the side of a piece of wood (shown right), the underside of a table, and a metal pole. The MonsterPod attaches to the tripod mount on a compact digital camera (because of weight concerns, MonsterPod’s makers don’t recommend using it with an SLR or other large-body camera) and can be molded to fit almost any form.

Windows Live ID is new Passport

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft plans to receive the service of Passport authentication in the family of services web Windows Live by 2007, renaming it to Windows Live ID. Microsoft Live ID seems will be based on the new InfoCard technology.

Sources familiar with the situation say Windows Live ID is part of up to three-dozen "Live" services currently in development. Some of these products would piggyback on top of preexisting services -- like Windows Live Local Search Free Call, which enables users to call businesses directly from search results.

Gates provided the first clues to the existence of Windows Live ID at the RSA Conference, when he said InfoCard was intended to replace Passport and would make password-based authentication obsolete.
