Microsoft Vista to block spyware

Posted by Harsha

Anti Spyware
Microsoft Windows Vista, the much awaited successor to Microsoft Windows XP. The operating system is being designed to shut the door on spyware. It will introduce important changes at the heart of the operating system, as well as to Internet Explorer, and include Windows Defender, an anti-spyware tool.

Spyware and its less-noxious cousin adware are widely despised for their sneaky distribution tactics, unauthorized data gathering and slowing of PCs. The unwanted software does not typically land on a computer the way a virus or a worm does. Instead, it creeps onto a system by tricking the user into clicking on a malicious link on a Web site or in an instant message. Alternatively, the distributor may secretly bundle it with an innocuous application that the user does want, such as a free application for file sharing.

Though spyware has been able to haunt users of XP, it won't be as easy for miscreants to get their malicious software onto machines that run Vista, said Austin Wilson, a director in the Windows Client group at Microsoft.

Microsoft Vista rates your PC

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft is building a tool into its Vista OS that will rate a PC based on how well it is running and on how much it can take advantage of Vista's capabilities.
Microsoft vista
The "Windows Performance Rating," is measured by evaluating components such as the processor, the memory, the hard drive and graphics cards to come up with an overall score. The rating appears in a large blue circle and can be seen in multiple places in the operating system, though Microsoft has said little about what exactly the rating signifies. The main rating is on a scale of 1 to 5, but individual components are also given a "sub rating" on some other, unspecified range.

Microsoft said
"The idea behind the Windows Performance Rating is to help average consumers easily understand their Windows Vista PC's overall performance, and to simplify the process of determining whether certain software applications will run smoothly based on their system components,"

SONY PlayStation 3 to be delayed?

Posted by Harsha

SONY launch of its next-generation PlayStation 3 video game console could be delayed until next year, according to a report.

Report says that Sony's decision to use an "ambitious new processor architecture--the Cell" is making it look like the company might not be able to meet its goal of getting the PS 3 out in the U.S. this year.

The report suggests the possibility that the PS 3 would launch this fall in Japan and in late 2006 or early 2007 in the U.S.

Naturally, it's impossible to know what will really happen with the PS 3, as Sony has maintained a policy of being about as tight-lipped as it could be. But there's no doubt that any significant delay in the next-gen console's launch would be a big black eye for the company, especially since Microsoft has had its Xbox 360 out since last November.

Microsoft pauses work on Adobe

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft has temporarily halted development work on some aspects of its upcoming professional graphics application as it tries to its other next-generation tools to market.

Microsoft Expression Graphic Designer is seen as the first serious attempt by Microsoft to Challenge Adobe Photoshop.

In an interview with ZDNet Australia, Smith explained that Microsoft was taking so long to bring Graphic Designer to market because the company had put "a lot" of the development work for the application "on pause", until sibling products and Vista could be finalised.

Smith also said that Microsoft sees Graphic Designer solely as a companion product for other products in the Expression range -- namely Interactive Designer and Web Designer.

Interactive Designer is for building the user interface and layout of interactive Web or Windows applications, while Web Designer is purely aimed at Web site construction.

The Expression range is meant to ease coordination between software developers who write code and graphic artists who create visual elements, using the Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) which Microsoft developed.
