Microsoft IE Flaw, Installs Spyware

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft
Microsoft IE vulnerability is caused due to an error in the processing of the "createTextRange()" method call applied on a radio button control. A radio button is a form field that presents the user with a selection that can be chosen by clicking on a button.

"Microsoft has determined that an attacker who exploits this vulnerability would have no way to force users to visit a malicious Web site . Instead, an attacker would have to persuade them to visit the Web site, typically by getting them to click a link that takes them to the attacker's Web site," Microsoft said in its Security Advisory.

The unpatched CreateTextRange vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer is already being used by at least one Web site to install spyware on users' machines, a security organization said Friday.

Vonage Puts VoIP 911 Caller on Hold

Posted by Harsha

vonage
A homeowner in Chanhassen, Minnesota, lost his house to a fire last month. When Veltkamp noticed that the fire had started, he immediately called 9-1-1 using Vonage. Unfortunately, Vonage put him on hold, causing a delay in the response from emergency workers. By the time fire crews arrived, the fire had become a five-alarm blaze. The house was a total loss, but no one was injured.

Vonage claims that nearly 70 percent of its customers now have E911 access, a feature that automatically associates a physical address with the calling party's telephone number.

Vonage has been updating its service with this feature steadily for the past six months. The company has announced that it has been turning up on average over 112 calling centers in more than 45 new counties each week. This month, Vonage has equipped an additional 170 calling centers in over 35 new counties with E911, bringing the total number of calling centers across the nation with emergency service to over 3600.

Dell Aquires Alienware

Posted by Harsha

PC maker Dell today bought Alienware a boutique computer outfit in a move that would boost Dell position in the growing market for gaming PCs.

Alienware enjoys the same reputation with technophiles as do certain underground bands among music aficionados. Hard-core gamers and others who like computers with high-end graphics are proud to own machines unfamiliar to the common masses.

Mr. Pearson said Dell, will allow Alienware to operate independently, maintaining control of everything from development to pricing also here won’t be any Dell logos on Alienware machines. That will make the company stand apart from Lenovo, which added its name to IBM’s ThinkPads when it acquired Big Blue’s PC division

Regardless, the companies and the analyst all noted that Alienware’s and Dell’s core customers are as different as a racecar driver and a soccer mom would be in the auto market. Prices—Alienware’s desktops start at about $900, the same as Dell’s highest-end machine—aren’t expected to change immediately.

Dell’s strong connections with suppliers could help lower Alienware’s costs, which in turn could increase its profit margins.

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft Vista
Microsoft will delay the consumer release of its new Windows Vista until January 2007. The delay in Windows Vista is caused due to Microsoft needing more time to enhance security and other functions, this will come as a blow to Microsoft partners who were looking forward to a new operating system to boost holiday sales.

However Microsoft will release some versions of the Vista operating system for big businesses in November as planned, but the consumer version will be postponed until January, said Jim Allchin, co-president of the Microsoft division that includes Windows.

Google has finally launched its own Google Finance service. For years now, those seeking financial information via Google were been sent to competitors such as Yahoo and MSN. Now Google's is providing financial information directly to its own users.

Aside from charts, Google will be offering news and blog search results related to companies listed in the finance area.
