Microsoft soon to release Five Security Fixes

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft
Microsoft plans to issue at least five free software updates next week to fix security flaws in its Windows operating system and other software products. Of these one of the updates will carry a 'critical' rating, which Microsoft assigns to flaws that could be used by attackers or automated computer worms to take over vulnerable computers without any action on the part of the user.

Microsoft is expected to issue several updates for its Internet Explorer Web browser, including one to fix a flaw that criminals have been using to plant spyware on computers when users merely visit one of hundreds of malicious Web sites.

SFO Wireless Goes to Earthlink and Google

Posted by Harsha

google
San Francisco on Wednesday selected a joint bid by Google and EarthLink to provide San Francisco with a wireless network.

That means for a third of the price you can get coverage that is at least twice if not three times as fast. If you don't need speed and can live with 300k (and most people could) you just use the free service from google.

San Francisco residents, as a result, won't likely see the free Wi-Fi service for another six to eight months, an EarthLink representative said.

Google will manage the free 300-kilobits-per-second Wi-Fi service, while EarthLink will offer the faster premium service of 1mbps for up to $20 a month.

Posted by Harsha

Paypal
Online payment company PayPal on Thursday said MTV and the National Basketball Association (NBA) and others will accept payments from a new service allowing purchases by mobile phone text message.

The move by PayPal, a unit of online auctioneer eBay Inc., marks a big step in bridging the worlds of electronic commerce and brick-and-mortar stores, by giving consumers a pay option via telephone.

PayPal Mobile lets consumers instantly buy goods and services, such as compact discs, DVDs and apparel, by sending product codes via text message.

PayPal President Jeff Jordan is set to introduce PayPal Mobile, a service that allows consumers in the United States and Canada to send money anytime via mobile phone, at a keynote speech at a mobile industry conference in Las Vegas.

PayPal has more than 100 million customers worldwide. To use PayPal Mobile, customers must activate their mobile phones by signing on to their PayPal accounts here.

Jumpcut online video sharing

Posted by Harsha

video
San Francisco based stealth startup Jumpcut, founded by Mike Folgner and Ryan Cunningham, just launched minutes ago.

Jumpcut, as the newest entrant, has some really spectacular features, that should encourage video mashing between users.
video
It’s editing features, also using Flash, are better than what I saw with Motionbox. Any video can be cloned (unless restricted by the publisher), and other clips can be added to the cloned video. Sound files can be added to either overwrite existing audio or mix in with it. They also allow a number of “transition” features as effects. Overall, its pretty cool. Check it out by clicking “remix” on this video screen.

The finished videos can be kept private, shared or made public. Jumpcuts provides code snippets to allow video playback from blogs and other websites as well. Jumpcut does not have a deep tagging feature.

The service is currently free and allows uploads of up to 50 MB. A paid service will be available soon at $5/month, and Jumpcut will also have a client install available to allow users to do some of the editing and transcoding work before uploading it to the Jumpcut server.

Yahoo! Extra email Addresses

Posted by Harsha

yahoo
Yahoo Mail is now offering its user a second email address. This is perfect if you don't like your current Yahoo ID and wish you had something a little snappier. Note that this isn't a second email account, but a second email address. Email sent to either of these addresses will appear in the same inbox. Also note that in order to fight spam, Yahoo limits each user to two changes per year only.

To configure a second email address, click Options and click Mail Addresses at the top of the Management section. At the bottom of the screen, click the Get Started link under Extra Email Address. You can enter a new address or select a suggested address. You can use either your original Yahoo ID or the new email address you created to log in to Yahoo email. You can also select which address to use for the return address when sending an email. Click the From field and select the address you want to use.

If you decide you don't like the new address, open Mail Address in the Options page again, select the extra email address, and click Delete. You can now create a new email address if you want (but again, remember that you can only change this address twice in a year).

Pixrat Bookmarks Photos

Posted by Harsha

photo
Indian based Pixrat, founded by three Ex-Yahoo employees, is a Del.icio.us for photos. It is a social photo bookmarking tool. It is a collection of links to interesting and popular photos on the web.

Here is how it works: Users add their bookmarklet to your browser, and when you are on a page with photos and you’d like to bookmark one of them, click the bookmarklet and follow the steps to choose the photo and tag it. Photos can be sorted by recency or by popular, or search by tag. If you see a picture bookmarked on Pixrat that you like, you can click to bookmark it in your account and add your own tags.

That’s it.It is Pretty simple. If we are doing photo based research, this would be a very useful tool. What it needs, RSS feeds for tags, user accounts, and the popular and new categories.

Microsoft releases new mice

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft
Microsoft released an upgraded version of a wireless optical mouse intended for laptop users and plans to introduce two new desktop mice one laser and one optical.

The Wireless Optical Notebook Mouse 3000, which sells for $29, is billed as an upgrade to the company's best-selling Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse. Microsoft described the device as a more portable, easier-to-stow option for laptop users and said its new design features improved mousing in cramped spaces such as airplanes or small cafe tables.

Set for release in late April for $49, the five-button, ambidextrous Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 is geared toward desktop users. That device will contain a Magnifier button, designed to allow for real-time enlargement and editing of any section of a user's screen. It will also bear Microsoft's familiar Tilt Wheel technology, which permits horizontal and vertical scrolling through pages.

Microsoft plans to release the Wireless Optical Mouse 2000, another desktop-oriented gadget. At $29, the three-button, silver-accented device is being marketed as a more affordable alternative to the laser mouse.

Apple vs Apple in Music Lawsuit

Posted by Harsha

apple ipod
Apple Corps, owner Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, and the estate of George Harrison, is suing Apple Computer for a third time.

The trial has already begun in London's High Court. Apple Corps is contending that Apple Computer has crossed the line into the music business with iTunes which violates their past agreements.

Anthony Grabiner, lead counsel for Apple, in his opening statement on Thursday, argued that the iTunes Music Store is primarily a data transmission service. He stated that "data transmission is within our field of use".
