Second bug in a week looms over IE users

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft
Second time in a week, hackers have discovered a previously unknown bug in Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) browser that could be exploited to run unauthorized software on a Windows computer.

This new bug reported could be exploited to gain control of a Windows system and has been given a "high risk" rating by the FrSIRT security Web site.

Although "proof-of-concept" code showing how this vulnerability could be exploited has been published, making the bug a more serious concern, there are some mitigating factors. Attackers would first need to trick users into visiting a specially coded Web page and then somehow get them to perform certain actions, such as writing "specific text in a text field," before they could run their malicious software, FrSIRT said.

"The vulnerability cannot be used to execute code on a user's system without multiple user actions that are uncommon in typical Web browsing scenarios," Microsoft said in a statement provided by its public relations agency. "Due to the significant mitigating factors... we have determined that the issue would be most appropriately addressed in a service pack delivery rather than a security update."

Phishers dials in to VoIP

Posted by Harsha

Taking advantage of the low cost of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology, thieves have now begun luring victims to fake Automated call centers via a new kind of phishing attack.

Typically phishers email their victims, trying to lure them into revealing sensitive information on bogus Web sites. But instead of telling victims to click on a Web link, these attackers asks users to verify their account information on a phony customer support number.

To date the phone phishing attacks have not been widespread. Cloudmark first started seeing these attacks in mid-April and they stopped after continuing on a very limited scale for about three days.

Cloudmark intercepted about 1,000 of these phishing messages, a small number considering that Cloudmark's email filtering service is used to filter email for about 100 million mailboxes.

However, the attacks caught Cloudmark's attention because of its use of a telephone number, which was served by a small U.S based VoIP carrier. This made them some of the first to leverage the cost savings of VoIP.

VoIP services are appealing because they allow customers to set up numbers anywhere in the world. And because they can be combined with telephone software like the opensource Asterisk PBX (Private Branch Exchange) product, it can be in-expensive for thieves to set up a professional phone line.

Spammers have already been taking advantage of these low costs, using phone numbers instead of Web sites in their email solicitations, but this was the first time Cloudmark had seen the approach used by phishers.

In the announcement on the IEBlog, the team says they've "acted on a lot of the feedback and bug reports from the previous public releases" and made changes to CSS handling and responded to reliability data ("yes, we do analyze the information that comes when you click 'Send Error Report'") and user experience feedback. In addition, Microsoft is now offering free phone support in North America, Germany, and Japan "to encourage people who usually shy away from beta software to try IE7 Beta 2."

Microsoft Sees Opportunties in Mobile Search

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft Mobile
Microsoft hopes to establish itself as a leading provider of mobile search services, with the introduction of its new technologies that are now being tested.
Mobile search is important because in many markets, including some Asian countries, more people access the Internet from mobile phones than from PCs. For users like these, being able to combine search results with services that can sense a user's location is critical.
Called Windows Live Mobile Search, the technology is being tested in the U.S. and the U.K. It allows users to search for local listings, such as shops and restaurants, and provides them with maps and driving directions. Users can also call any of the returned listings from their handset with a single click of a button.
Microsoft Windows Live Mobile Search also gives users access to search results from the Web, including blogs.
Microsoft isn't the only company looking to stake out its turf in mobile search. For example, Google and Baidu have signed mobile search agreements with handset makers Motorola and Nokia, respectively. One potential advantage for Microsoft is the growing popularity of phones that run Windows Mobile software.

They Rule company diagrams

Posted by Harsha

They Rule is a service that shows how directors of companies and their subordinates are closely linked. They Rule gets data from 2004, so it's a little outdated, but is truly a eye-opening and cool service, both just for their flash application that spiders relationships between directors of companies, but for the fact that if you know one director of one of these companies, you can know who are his subordinates.
First You choose a company, all it's directors show up. Then you can click on another director and choose find another company they sit on. They Rule allow you to search for news related to that companies; and search for relationships between companies. You can also save maps for later use. At the end of the day this is an interesting to look at, how rich company network look like.
