Adobe jumping into Ajax bandwagon

Posted by Harsha

Adobe is planing to jump into Ajax bandwagon and gone ahead with launch of free pre-release version of the Spry Ajax framework. The main purpose is make Ajax programming easier and much friendler for web designers.

Google has already developed a bulk of their web applications in Ajax like GMail, Google Calendar, Page Creator, Google Maps. Yahoo has Flickr and Maps service also use of Ajax technology.

Unlike other frameworks Adobe Spry lets Web designers create Ajax based web pages without learning this new language. Spry can be integrated with Macromedia, Dreamweaver, Adobe Golive or any other HTML authoring tool.

Spry can incorporate XML into HTML documents using technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Flex support will be integrated in the final release. A web designer can also view the source of a page built using Spry and quickly and easily and go further customize it.

Microsoft Launches Live Products

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft launched Live Products at products.live.com. They have included retail products from over 100000 sellers. Similar to googl's Froogle, Live Products is a commerce based search engine/shopping comparison engine that will, hopefully, give users relevant results when looking to buy items through online. Like Froogle, Live Products does not take payment from merchants for appearing within search results.

The difference between Froogle and Live Products, however. Froogle take data from merchants via a push/pull model (merchants use a Froogle API to include information), whereas Live Products pulls the data from the main Live Search web index so Live Producst is presenting crawled results and algorithmic ranking. Merchants will be included if they are in the index without taking any additional steps.

Live Products is not as good as Froogle yet, although a big part of this may be due to the fact that Froogle, with their push model, obtain very structured data from merchants. Live Products, in contrast, structures the data directly.

AOL offer Free Phone numbers for Messenger users

Posted by Harsha

AOL
AOL now wants to capitalize on the increased popularity of AIM, their instant messenger service. AOL will soon announce the launch of AIM Phoneline service that provides a free local phone number to AIM users to receive free calls. The service will allow users to call free if they are online.

Skype charges about $4 a month for a similar service. Yahoo also provides a personal phone number for receiving incoming calls to their PC from any regular phone lines or mobile phones for a price.

Even Other available services charges anywhere between $30 to $40 a year for a telephone number to receive incoming calls, and about 2 cents a minute to place phone calls from a PC to an ordinary telephone line.

AOL is joining a growing list of companies that are attacking the traditional telephone market with the aid of the Internet. There are now about five million subscribers to so-called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, communications services, according to International Data Corporation, a market research firm based in Framingham, Mass. Because cable and Internet companies are aggressively marketing the service, that is expected to increase to about 30 million subscribers by 2009.

Microsoft acquires DeepMetrix Web Analytics

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft Adcenter
The Advertisers on MSN and Microsoft Windows Live can directly place their ads on Microsoft MSN AdCenter instead of going through Yahoos Overture pay per click service.

After the success of Google Analytics and Adwords integration, Microsoft also plans to so the same to help its clients analyze what people do on their websites.

Microsoft acquired DeepMatrix that develops LiveStats web statistics and network monitoring software. Microsoft will add this new web analytics applications in future version of adCenter.

We may also see integration of DeepMetrix in Microsoft Office Live products that let you create and manage your own website. Though basic Web site traffic reports are already built into Office Live, a sophisticated package like Deepmetrix LiveStats.Biz would make the service better and more attractive.

Senate Bill Attacks VoIP and Content

Posted by Harsha

A Communications Act was proposed on the Senate floor, which would reinstate the audio and video broadcast flag, require VOIP traffic to be identifiable, and effectively eliminate analog televisions in a year's time.

The 135-page document, known as the "Communications, Choice, and Broadband Deployment Act of 2006," itself contains several subsections known as individual acts. The bill was co-authored by Senators Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Daniel Inouye(D-Hawaii), the chairman and co-chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee.

Although the bill has yet to be debated on the floor of the Senate, let alone be signed into law, it offers yet another glimpse into the issues that concern the legislative branch of the government.

"The measure we introduce today is a working draft intended to stimulate discussion and is open for comments and suggestions for change," Stevens said in floor testimony. "It attempts to strike a balance between competing industries, consumer groups and local government.

"Both Senator Inouye and I may propose additional changes based on comments offered by our Members or interested parties," Stevens added. "We intend to hold two hearings to take testimony on the draft bill and will listen to proposed changes. It's our hope that through a process of collaboration, we can draft a bill that truly represents a bipartisan consensus."

Windows Vista Unlikely to Ship early 2007

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft has promised that its Vista OS would be available in early 2007, Gartner analysts including Michael A. Silver believe that Windows Vista is unlikely to be Shippied Before second quarter of 2007. Here's is the recently published Gartner document on Windows Vista:

Microsoft's track record is clear; it consistently misses target dates for major operating system releases. We don't expect broad availability of Windows Vista until at least 2Q07, which is nine to 12 months after Beta 2.

MSN AdCenter will be launched in June

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft Adcenter
MSN adCenter is Microsoft's response for creating and delivering advertising online. The adCenter has been in beta test for months now and is widely expected to be launched in the US probably in June.

Matt Rosoff, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, said if he were to speculate, "I wouldn't be surprised if they announced a competitor to Google's adSense, or some other sort of ad revenue sharing deal with third parties--perhaps, for example, a sharing deal for commercial sites that tap into Windows Live Search or Virtual Earth.

The Liveside blog writes that much is the same way as Google's AdWords works, the ads on adCenter appears when a user performs search for a specific keyword, on MSN Search page. AdCenter also includes analysis tools so that ads can be fully optimized for ad campaigns by the Advertisers. Although, it may appear to be just like Google's product, there is much more in AdCenter.

Vonage Sets IPO Price

Posted by Harsha

vonage logo
Most cases when a company get it's pricing way down, trading will begin in a very short time. Being that Vonage announced its IPO per share price range between $16 and $18, valuing the company at $2.5bn to $2.8bn, I would expect to see its stocks on the market soon.

Vonage first filed for its IPO in February. The company since had grown silent about the move, leading to speculation that the VoIP provider could be pursuing different plans. Vonage currently operates in the US, Canada and the UK, and has received a licence to start offering its services in Singapore.

The company once again warned for that there are significant risks involved with investing in Vonage stock. The company doesn't plan to post profits in the near future, and warned that the quality of VoIP calls is worse than consumers are used to with landlines.

Skype New version for Mac not working

Posted by Harsha

Evenone jumped with joy when a newer version of Skype for Mac was released, but the celebration quickly came to an end when Skype removed the download link from its website because it "was non-working version."

Here are the some of the comments made at Skype Mac Blog:

"Inside the broken 1.4.0.39 package there is a Video icon (similar to the windows one), and a folder named “VideoPreferences.nib”!” - carlosgarzi

“So Skype posted a borked .39 version–it could happen to anyone I suppose BUT now it is almost 48 hours since the broken .dmg was pulled and you still haven’t replaced it with a good version!” - nekton23

“I figured it would be less than a day until the new, fixed build was out, but I’m dying here waiting…can you give us an indication of how much longer it’s likely to be (i.e. days, weeks, months)?” - efeingold

“Help! After installing the .39 UB Rosetta has completley stopped working! I can’t open any PPC apps” - kroccamen

Even after eBay’s purchase of Skype, it seems that Skype still finds a way to mess up their customer service (not releasing an immediate fix) and apparently their development/release process (the fact that they released a defunct version in the first place).

Stay tuned… Will we see Skype for Mac Video features or a new welcome screen? Or, even worse, will it be Skype for Mac INTEL Video only?
