Blogging style guide - Telegraph-uk

Posted by Harsha

Telegraph UK has come with a comprehensive blogging style guide which offer guidance to those who are new to blogging. The guide discusses varies things from Handling blog Comments to Establishing user interactivity to other blog related issues.

Here are some of the most interesting tips from Blog Guide

Try to find relevant links in your post. Get into the habit of directing people to blogs where you have read interesting articles or to sites that provide background on the subject.

Answering back: This is a good standby if you’re stuck for something to write about and several of our bloggers have done this already. Posting a round-up of responses to comments you have received on previous posts is an easy way to defeat ‘blogger’s block’ and increases the level of interaction with readers.

'I saw this and thought of you' - Short and to the point, this post quickly makes readers aware of an article you’ve read or upcoming event that you think will appeal to your readers. You can quickly summarise it and then offer a link to the relevant website.

Handling comments: The purpose of blogs is to allow readers to comment on your posts. Often, particularly when you start blogging, reader response may be very unflattering. Once you demonstrate that you have something constructive to add, you will find an audience and the criticism will settle down.

New Trojan Horse Targets Microsoft Word

Posted by Harsha

internet worm
Don't click! Malware loads after you open infected Word document.

Microsoft Word users should be extra careful about the files they download because hackers are exploiting an unpatched vulnerability in the Word software.

McAfee warned users of a new Trojan horse program, called BackDoor-CKB!cfaae1e6, that secretly installs software on a computer. However For this program to work, hackers must first trick users into opening a malicious Word document.

When the word doc attachment is opened, it exploits a previously unknown vulnerability in Microsoft Word and infects a fully patched Windows system. The exploit functioned as a dropper, extracting and launching a Trojan that immediately overwrites the original Word document with a "clean," uninfected copy.

"As a result of the exploit, Word crashes, informs the user of a problem, and offers to attempt to re-open the file. If the user agrees, the new 'clean' file is opened without incident," the ISC explained.

The ISC said the attack was traced to the Far East, with domains and IP addresses associated with the Trojan registered in China and Taiwan. "The [attack] e-mails received originated from a server in that region. The attackers appear to be aware that they have been 'outed,' and have been routinely changing the IP address associated with the URL above," the Storm Center said.

SANS has published a number of tips on how to avoid this type of attack. The security training organization recommends that companies limit users' privileges and monitor outbound traffic. It also suggests that companies think about quarantining all attachments for six to 12 hours in order to give the antivirus vendors time to catch up with new threats.

Trillian IM out of Google Pack

Posted by Harsha

Trillian
Popular IM application from Trillian is no longer in Google's free software suite.

Google has dropped Trillian IM software from its Google Pack software suite with nary an explanation, prompting a terse reaction from Cerulean Studios, maker of the popular instant messaging application.

"Our goals are seemingly no longer perfectly aligned with those of Google. Their reasons for removing Trillian are their own and were not made available to us," wrote Scott Werndorfer, Cerulean Studios' co-founder and head developer, in the company's blog today. "We harbor no ill-will towards them and wish them the best of luck; they're going to need it."

Trillian consolidates in a single interface IM contacts from a variety of IM services, such as America Online's AIM, Yahoo's Yahoo Messenger and Microsoft's MSN Messenger.

Most users find this capability extremely helpful. Most IM services don't interoperate with each other, making it necessary to log on separately to each IM network to communicate with its members. While Trillian doesn't solve the interoperability problem, users conveniently don't have to keep an IM buddy-list interface open for each network.

Google offers free Ajax tools

Posted by Harsha

Google is making available its Ajax web development tools for free, including the tools used to develop its popular Google Maps system. The open source Ajax web development language is used by developers to easily add interactive features for end users to websites.

The Google Web Toolkit includes a Java compiler that allows users to convert Java code into the easier and Java-compatible Ajax code. Ajax consists of JavaScript working with XML. The Google toolkit will help to make sure that content developed for websites will behave in the same way for all browsers, one problem that Ajax developers have often failed to achieve. Google has used Ajax to help develop Google Maps, Google Calendar and the GMail e-mail system.

Earlier Oracle also made available for free a set of Ajax web development tools. Oracle made available a set of Ajax-enabled user-interface components. Oracle said developers would be able to assemble the reusable components on a page and connect them to an application data source. Oracle has integrated Ajax with the JavaServer Faces technology to build interactive user interfaces that run within a browser.

McAfee and Symantec trap pirates on eBay

Posted by Harsha

ebay pirates
The largest antivirus vendors are launching legal action against a group of software pirates who were selling illegal versions of its security software on eBay.

McAfee and Symantec decided to get tough on the pirates by throwing their considerable weight behind a larger SIIA campaign to rid eBay of pirated software sales. The SIIA is planning to ensnare criminals by buying software from eBay and suing those whose products turn out to be illegal.

There are dozens of sales on ebay offering software from Symantec's Norton range, as well as McAfee products. Many appeared far from legitimate, with some lots consisting of nothing more than a CD, with sellers admitting that boxes and manuals--as well as licenses, no doubt--were not included in the sale.

"McAfee takes the sale and distribution of pirated software extremely seriously," a McAfee representative said. "We proactively take all measures possible to shut down all auctions where it is obvious that illegal or gray imports of our products are being sold on eBay or indeed any auction site."

Google Toolbar directs users to pirate sites

Posted by Harsha

A Belgian company has refiled a lawsuit over search results returned by Google toolbar that it claims directs users to pirated software sites.

The lawsuit, filed in February, was refiled again by ServersCheck, a small company that makes network monitoring software, over Google's "Suggest" feature, included in the latest version of its search toolbar. When a user types a keyword for a search, the toolbar shows a drop-down menu of guesses related to those words.

If ServersCheck is entered, Google generates suggested search terms such as "serverscheck crack," "serverscheck pro crack," and "serverscheck keygen," which lead to pirated software, said Maarten Van Laere, chief executive officer of ServersCheck.

Van Laere said he was told by Google that Web sites with illegal content would be removed from their index, but that it couldn't tweak the Suggest feature. So Van Laere filed suit, an action he said is an expensive option for a small company against a behemoth such as Google.

Microsoft launched counter attack against Google

Posted by Harsha

Microsoft hinted that it will crush Google in the same way it crushed Netscape by integrating enterprise search into its Windows Vista, Office 2007, Outlook 2007 and SharePoint 2007 and with the rest of the Windows platform and also with emerging web services from Microsoft.

Microsoft multifaceted search platform, which includes Vista Search, Sharepoint Enterprise Search, Windows Live Search and an enhanced web search, cannot be matched by rivals because it harnesses other Windows services such as workflow and BI. This will enable users not only to search and find corporate data but analyze it, act on it in a logical way and share it with colleagues, Gates said.

"This is the last mile of productivity," Gates said, noting that the ability to search across the corporate desktop, network, intranet, and Internet services from a common user interface will help reduce or eliminate information overload affecting knowledge workers.

"The key differentiating thing is how the information is presented," Gates said during his keynote, noting that it's not enough to do business intelligence well, or search well, or portal well, but to allow these services to "feed off each other" and provide information in context to end users.

Blue Security lose fight against email spammers

Posted by Harsha

email Security
Israeli-based based company Blue Security maintained has an encrypted list of 522,000 of its client emails for which the spammers should stop sending junk e-mail. But because those sort of requests tend to be ignored, Blue Security took them to a new level: it bombarded the spammers with requests from all 522,000 of its customers at the same time.

That led to a flood of Internet traffic(DDOS attack) so heavy that it disrupted the spammers' ability to send emails to other victims a crippling effect that caused a handful of known spammers to comply with the requests.

Russia based spammer counterattacked using tens of thousands of hijacked computers, the spammer flooded Blue Security with so much Internet traffic that it blocked legitimate visitors from going to Bluesecurity website, as well as to other Web sites.

ICANN approves creation of .tel domain

Posted by Harsha

ICANN logo
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers(ICANN) has approved a new top level domain suffixed ".tel" like .com or .net and is going to go into affect in 2007.

Telnic envisions a domain that will enable a more effectively operating IP communications network. The .Tel domain will serve as a location in which online contact information can be found. Telnic will release free applications to allow .tel domains to be integrated with address books found in computer systems and mobile phones. The ultimate aim is to have the .Tel domain itself direct or broker the method of communication used.

Telnic offered the example of how this new domain could aid someone trying to reach the Hertz Corp. car rental service. A user would type Hertz.tel on their mobile phone and be connected to a customer service representative for the local area.

Businesses and individuals will be able to use the .Tel domain to publish and update contact information directly in the Domain Name System. Telnic explains that the intended purpose of the domain is to enable businesses or individuals to decide, in real time, by what means customers, friends and colleagues will be able to reach them. Communications methods could include: VoIP, conventional telephony (fixed-line or wireless), email, SMS, Skype, AIM and many others.

"The .Tel domain offers the first genuinely different use of domains since .com was first created. It will provide seamless integration of existing methods of communication with emerging technologies like Voice over IP (VoIP). This places the .Tel domain at the core of the next phase of Internet development." - CEO of Telnic

SkypeOut calls Free in US and Canada

Posted by Harsha

Skype VoIP
Skype has announced that calls made through Skypeout to a landline or mobile phone in the US or Canada are now free, this offer is only through the end of this year.

In order to make a free call the Skype user must reside in US or Canada at the time of the call, and the called phone number must be of a valid US or Canadian mobile/ phone number. Skype calls to US numbers are currently priced at $0.02 per minute.

There are lots of other ways to make free calls in the US, but none that have no set monthly fee. This won't help users overseas who are using Skype to call into the US.
