Extension to Backup FireFox Extension

Posted by Harsha

FEBE has a simple and useful Firefox Backup extension for managing all your Firefox Extensions and even your firefox browser themes, bookmarks, preferences, and even cookies.

Say you have installed tons of extensions on your computer and need to backup all the extensions and restore the same on your laptop or you want to format your machine and install them back, there is no option in firefox to do the backup. So you had to copy one by one manually to the other computer.

FEBE Firefox Backup extension
FEBE Firefox Backup extension

Now you can do the same by just installing FEBE (Firefox Extension Backup Extension). It backs up your browser extensions, themes, and (optionally) your bookmarks, preferences and cookies. FEBE V2.0 (V3.0 is still in development) will backup your entire Firefox Profile on one click.

FEBE will actually rebuild all your extensions individually into installable packages .xpi files that can easily be moved around and freshly installed on other machines.

Camera Phones Kill Memories

Posted by Harsha

Now a days people are finding Camera phones as a convinient and simple for taking quick snaps, but these images are not suitable to take very important pictures of the events like Graduation Days or a Wedding Ceremonies.

Lance Ulanoff comments on this: with a 1-megapixel camera phone that offers a teardrop-size lens and a focal length somewhat smaller than the thickness of a fly's whisker seems really bad idea to captures these important events in ones life.

I mean, seriously, don't these people own regular digital cameras? Of course they do! Did they forget them? Probably not. I think they made the conscious decision to leave the bulkier camera at home and capture the magic with their Motorola Razr.

A camera phone leaves you with one set of crappy images (don't even think about using it for video). A good digital camera will provide an endlessly shareable set of high-quality images and, potentially, quite passable video.

Ultimately, those seeking to capture memories need to think not only of the moment, but of the future. They need to imagine the day when they'll be sitting in their living room or den, laughing and crying over their digitally captured memories.

Cablevision to offer Optimum Voice VOIP

Posted by Harsha

Cablevision recently announced a major change to their Optimum Voice VOIP by offering $19.95 per month to call anywhere in the world. This is a strong departure from Skype’s "Skype Out" cost per minute, and Vonage’s international rates. I would say this is first step towards the true domination of VOIP.

Main Features include:

* Talk as long as you want! Up to 500 minutes of calling anywhere in the world, day or night.
* That's over 8 hours of talk time a month!
* No hidden fees and no per-minute or connection charges.
* Same low rate every month with no surprises.
* It's easy to use — just pick up and call directly from your Optimum Voice home phone — no extra numbers or special codes to dial.
* Monitor your usage at the My Optimum Voice website.
* Easy billing to your Cablevision account — no prepaid calling cards to purchase.

Symantec challenge to OneCare faces delay

Posted by Harsha

Norton 360
Symantec's next generation security software Norton 360 and faces a delay from the original September due date.

Word of the delay comes as Microsoft is starting to ship its Windows Live OneCare security product and a day after McAfee announced its Falcon project for new, integrated consumer security software, slated for delivery this summer.

Symantec unveiled plans for its new software, then code-named Genesis, in February. The product is to rival Microsoft's OneCare and Windows Vista security technology, and will integrate components of Symantec's current security, PC optimisation and backup products, the security company has said.

"We're currently targeting to have the code available in Q4 (the fourth quarter)," Salem said. "In July, we will make a large public beta available. The feedback from our customers, the feedback from our channel partners, will help us decide when we make the product available to our customers."

Vonage Stock price spins

Posted by Harsha

Vonage said that customers who reserved shares in the Internet phone company's initial public offering last week must pay for their stock, despite the fact that the shares have already lost 29% of its value since the offering. Previously, the company had suggested it might not force customers to pay for their shares, since doing so could alienate them.

In the weeks before its IPO, Vonage took the unusual approach of allowing customers and other people close to the company to reserve shares without putting down any money. They weren't required to pay for the shares until May 30, six days after the May 24 IPO. By the later date, Vonage had established itself as the worst-performing IPO of the year. Shares, which were originally priced at $17, had tumbled to $12.50 by the close on May 30, and slipped again yesterday, to $12.02. Many customers now appear reluctant to pay the original price for their shares.

Google unlikely to create its own Web browser

Posted by Harsha

Eric Schmidt said that the online search engine gaint is unlikely to create its own Web browser, even though the company remains worried about being slighted by the next version of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

"It looks like people have some good browsers choices already," Schmidt said. "We would not build a browser for the fun of building a browser," he said.

Sure Microsoft has some sigh of relief because their next version of IE will only have face competion from Firefox, Safari and Opera. Google has no plans in entering the competition anytime soon even though they own gbrowser.com for that purpose.

AOL suffering email glitch

Posted by Harsha

AOL e-mail users were prevented from sending or receiving most of their e-mail for at least three hours Thursday morning, the online portal said.

"An e-mail software issue started to cause delays in the sending and receiving of AOL e-mails for our members and AOL.com users, said company spokesman Nicholas Graham. "We are in the process of implementing a fix and investigating its cause."

Graham said all the e-mail will eventually be delivered once the glitch is corrected. Meanwhile, some users will receive messages intermittently. However, Graham couldn't say when the software problem might be completely fixed.

McAfee sends Falcon after Symantec Microsoft

Posted by Harsha

mcafee software
McAfee is readying new security software, code named Falcon, to rival upcoming products from Symantec and newcomer Microsoft.

The product will integrate features found in McAfee's current range of security products with a revamped user interface to manage it, McAfee said in a statement on Tuesday. The Santa Clara, California, company had been expected to make such an announcement in response to Microsoft's entry into the security market.

Falcon will protect PCs against spam, viruses, spyware and other threats such as phishing scams and rootkits, McAfee said. It will also offer tools to prevent data loss, help optimise PC performance and secure a wireless network, it said. The product is slated to debut this summer in a variety of packages.

"OneCare and Genesis are promoted as all-in-one, everything-you-need offerings," Marc Solomon, director of product management at McAfee, said in an interview. "We have done extensive research and talked to a lot of consumers and found out that one size does not always fit all."

Like Microsoft and Symantec, McAfee is promoting Falcon as a security product that is easy to use. The product will be sold as a service, with the consumer paying a recurring subscription price. Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare and Symantec's "Genesis" will also be sold on the same basis, the companies have said.

NYPD to track stolen iPods through etching program

Posted by Harsha

apple Ipod
Due to increase in iPod thefts in NewYork subways, the NYPD has launched a new program to register and track iPods.

"Under the iPod etching program, cops are using invisible ink to mark the mini-music machines—as well as cell phones, BlackBerries and other electronic devices—so they can return lost or stolen items to their rightful owners and connect with potential prosecution witnesses".

"This sucker was $299. So if there's a way to get it back, sign me up," said upper East Side resident Mark Willner, 44, as he registered his iPod. "My reservation was that they'd scratch or damage it with the tag. But it's nothing."

The police are offering the free iPod service at Transit Bureau offices, and are setting up tables throughout the subway system where devices can be marked. About 2,100 devices have been registered in the last three months.

Daily peek into Adsense Earnings in Realtime

Posted by Harsha

google adsense earnings
infosthetics website contains a sparkline diagram of its relative daily Google Adsense earnings, that is updated hourly. in contrast to the quite static "unique visitors" graph, this sparkline is more volatile & shows more complex patterns that are interesting to grasp. It is loosely based on a script that creates an Adsense RSS feed. instead of a RSS file, it now parses the data into a sparkline.

Most importantly, one must first kindly ask Google Adsense permission for its use! note that this display is in accordance to the Google Adsense policy, as it does not disclose the earnings directly, but only shows its relative fluctuations. see more information about this issue after the break.

The Adsense Team Approved this sparkline -
"Thank you for taking the time to email us. Generally publishers are not permitted to disclose daily earnings information in any form. However, you may implement the chart you have described, as long as it does not display any numbers or draw undue attention to the ads."

Nokias luxury brand Vertu

Posted by Harsha

nokia mobile phone
Vertu, the luxury brand of mobile maker Nokia, is growing fast as a result partly of geographic expansion and plans to launch in the Nordic countries.

"We are now growing in three digit numbers, mainly thanks to geographical expansion and launching new handsets," Finnish business daily Kauppalehti quoted Torres as saying in an interview.

"We sell tens of thousands of phones annually, and our goal is to reach annual sales of hundreds of thousands of phones," he said, but added that high volumes specifically were not a target for Vertu, which is based in Britain.

Vertu comes in six models with standard cell phone features including Bluetooth connectivity and multi-language predictive text input. The polished gold model (left) retails at one U.S. jewelry chain for $18,750. A Signature Standard platinum model retails for $31,850.

Police close major BitTorrent site

Posted by Harsha

close site
ThePirateBay website accused of directing users to pirated films, music and software has been closed by Swedish police. More than 50 law enforcement officers raided 10 locations and confiscated the computers and arrested three people.

ThePirateBay had described itself to be the largest search index for BitTorrent, a system used for sharing large files over the internet.

In a statement the police said the people had been taken in for questioning "on suspicion of breaking copyright law or abetting the breaking of copyright law".

A statement on ThePirateBay.org website questioned the reason behind the police action.

"The necessity for securing technical evidence for the existance (sic) of a web-service which is fully official, the legality of which has been under public debate for years and whose principals are public persons giving regular press interviews, could not be explained," said the statement.

"Asked for other reasoning behind the choice to take down a site, without knowing wether (sic) it is illegal or not, the officers explained that this is normal."

It said it planned to up and running again within a few days.

Send your phone voicemail to your email

Posted by Harsha

The big advantages of VoIP is that it lets you check your voicemail on a PC. It is easier and faster to process messages on a computer screen than it is to wade through linear voice prompts. But cellular users and those who don't want to replace their home phone service are still stuck navigating voicemail the old-fashioned way.

Gotmail offers relief at no charge. This clever and free product will dial up your voicemail service periodically, record your messages, and both save them on its Web site and e-mail them to you. If you sign up for a premium (paid) account, you can bypass the advertising and get more control over when the service checks your messages.

This service would be good in one way when you are oversees and need to check your voicemail.

Earn free mobile minutes from Virgin Mobile

Posted by Harsha

vigin mobile phone
Virgin Mobile, a cellphone service used mostly by teenagers, is giving its customers the option to earn free mobile minutes if they view and respond to ads on their mobile phones.

Wireless providers are giving its users more features such as Web browsers and video players in cell phones in an effort to expand their revenue beyond voice. They also hope to profit from using these advanced phones to display advertising.

Under the offer, customers of Virgin, can get up to 75 minutes of free calls per month if they spend an equal amount of time looking at ads and replying to these ads via text messages.

"If you give somebody the choice whether you can have free content with advertising or you can pay for the content they'll chose the former," Golvin said.

"Realistically the price of voice is pretty darn cheap on a mobile phone these days so giving somebody three free minutes of mobile voice is not a compelling proposition for most mobile users."
