Google Jockeying: What is it?

Posted by Harsha

Google jockeying might be an effective technology tool in modern classrooms which allows students acquire skills faster by doing online research based on the tasks in hand.

A Google jockey is a participant in a presentation or class session who surfs the Internet for terms, ideas, or Web sites mentioned by the presenter or related to the topic at hand. A screen displays the jockey’s searches for all participants to see.

Typically the instructor or presenter will use at least one projection screen to show slides or other content to a class. Google jockeying adds one or more screens to the session, allowing students to see related resources and additional information that clarify the main topic.

Although the term takes its name from the Google search engine, any search engine will do, and the practice also includes navigating directly to known Web sites that might(or might not) be directly mentioned in the lecture, without passing through a search engine.

A Google jockey might look for definitions of specific terms, images or multimedia files that demonstrate concepts, or other online resources that illuminate a topic.

Microsoft Shortcut: Open executable through IE

Posted by Harsha

Windows shortcut trick allows any executable file to be executed when a user types a Web address into Internet Explorer Address Bar.

In order to perform this trick you need to do the following:

* Right click on the Desktop and create a new Shortcut

* Point the shortcut to an executable file such as c:\windows\system32\calc.exe

* Name the shortcut as say www.yahoo.com

* Start Internet Explorer and just type www.yahoo.com into the address bar

The above procedure opens windows calculator instead of going to yahoo website. In order to open the actual website you need to type full url with "http://".

Peter Watson, chief security adviser at Microsoft Australia, said this is not a security vulnerability but actually a feature that could be used by legitimate applications.

If you need to revert back to the way it was simply delete the shortcut you created.

This would be useful if you need to restrict your kid to a particular website by creating a shortcut in the name of the site.
